Five tips for coping with sexual harassment

When you’ve been subjected to sexual harassment, you can experience a wide range of negative effects. You can feel unsafe at your job, be subjected to adverse employment actions and retaliation, and suffer from the physical and emotional damage that often accompanies this egregious behavior.

That’s a lot to deal with, and you shouldn’t try to suppress the harm that’s been caused to you. Instead, you should find effective ways to cope with the wrongs that have been done to you so that you can focus on taking legal action, finding accountability, and recovering the compensation you deserve.

How to cope with the ramifications of sexual harassment

Although you might feel hopeless after being subjected to sexual harassment, there are effective coping strategies you can use to ease your suffering, get back on your feet, and gain confidence in fighting for a just outcome. This includes doing the following:

  • Keeping a journal where you can describe your thoughts and feelings about what’s been done to you.
  • Recognizing that you’re not to blame for the harassment or its corresponding effects that have befallen you.
  • Talking to a mental health professional who can help you develop strong coping and emotional regulation skills.
  • Discussing your experiences with others who have also been subjected to sexual harassment so that you can gain support, understanding, and new ideas for how to get by in the aftermath of your harassment.
  • Realizing that it’s going to take some time to get over this but that you will come out of it stronger.

Recognize the importance of taking legal action

While the tips above should help you get through the aftermath of your harassment, you also shouldn’t overlook the role that legal action can play in your recovery. After all, if you’re success on your claim, then you can find accountability and closure while recovering compensation for the damage that’s been caused to you.
